I believe it is the New Bedford Preservation Society that would work with WHALE on this type of project.

This isn't a response...but a new topic...I love the picture of the New Bedford High School we all knew. I can't imagine another building being NBHS...Something else I thought about..how many of us still have our class rings?? Not sure if the design has changed, but the original design is so unique and the whaleman statue is what makes it New Bedford.

Yes Nancy that was a great school building. As far as many are concerned is the ONLY New Bedford High School.

We only had to deal with EAST Wing and West Wing, the kids today deal with colored coded buildings. The fact that the new high school looks like a commercial building and has had problems with PCB's.....is another issue.

"The high school" will always be on County Street and the top of William Street. I sometimes refer to the old high school as a reference point when giving directions. Problem is it is usually to someone either not familar with "the old high school" or too young to remember it!!

And yes, I still have the ring!!

We were the last class to graduate and march down William Street to the Olympia Theater with nearly 1,000 graduates...we were and still are grand and fine representatives of New Bedford High School and New Bedford, Massachusetts.

This reunion website seems to have started as a trickle and is now gathering a lot of momentum. I have been receiving messages from people I have not seen since 1965.

Who knew back then that we would be able to send a note to one another from across the world, in a matter of seconds, rather than just across the asile. We don't even have to worry about being caught and sent to detention hall!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to mention a couple of teachers who have been part of my life since graduating from NBHS - Dorothy Laflamme (Castaldo) and Mary Ann Peters(Chomak).
What great teachers and mentors. They have the "right stuff!!"

Just remembered something. Were we the first graduating class to sit in the new seats in the auditorium? I still remember the smell of the adhesive that was used to glue the VINYL ASBESTOS floor tiles to the concrete and the LEAD paint that was used on the wood work. How did we ever survive 1965?

We have had the good fortune of having many caring and dedicated teachers at NBHS.

Hi Carl:

We were lucky to have exceptional teachers, and many were, but we also grew up in a very special time in history, that's part of the equation. The other part of course, is the people we shared high school with back then. Our classmates were a very diverse group. At school observing some of them , I felt very inspired.

Maria

You are right on about going to NBHS during the time we did. I would go back to those days tomorrow just to enjoy the fun we had in that building and the city of New Bedford, those were such special times, and we lucky to have lived them.

A big thank you to all who are on the reunion committee. I have had so much fun connecting with classmates who I haven't seen in years! 45??? Looking through my classbook this past weekend brought back a flood of memories and thoughts of wishing we could go back to those years, even if it were just for a week.....Hope everyone is well and having as much fun as I! Thanks again to all who are working so hard to make our reunion possible. Does anyone know how to contact Deanna Lipman or Marty Bakken??????

Hello:

Yes, it's very sad. I can visualize her face, we shared several classes. It's wonderful reconnecting with our classmates but the other side of the coin is the sad realization that so many are gone. May she rest in peace. Take care, Maria

Sad to inform we lost a loving beautiful heart in Mary Icaponi. I was informed Mary passed away suddenly sometime last week. Mary was so looking forward to seeing and being with everyone at the reunion. Her family came first in her life and was so important. I cannot begin to imagine her Dad Gino dealing with this loss. My heart aches for him for I knew him before I even met Mary from my youth at the golf courses where he played. I also ache for her brother and sister. We had connected thru this wonderful site, it brings great joy and times like these great saddness. Mary I miss you and your e-mails which included your last one to me of how you were going to drive down to "inflict great bodily harm to me if I don`t hurry up and send my commitment in,but on second thought you thought I might like it too much" always the jokester. Rest my dear sister and know what I always wanted to tell you  "I Love You" chuck.

I just wanted to add a posting from today Standard Times on the death of one of my favorites teachers at NBHS, Tony Felix , at age 83.  He was one of the teachers that taught and made learning fun.  I went into his class with an air of confidence having spoken to my grandparents in portuguese my entire life ( actually when I started kindergarten at BB Winslow my english was questionable because of that) and thought it would be a cake walk.  He quickly brought me to realize that I was sadly mistaken given the slang my grandparents had adopted.   He was a great teacher and a wonderful person, I'm sure he will be sadly missed.  Rest in Peace......

With fond memories

Tony Ponte
