I remember Jane from Normandin Jr. High and NBHS.  She was a friend to all who knew her.  May she rest in Peace.

.

Jane E. Carvalho, Esq., 72, passed away peacefully after a long illness on October 19, 2019.

Jane was born and raised in New Bedford before moving to Mattapoisett 20 years ago. She was the daughter of the late Antone Carvalho and Zaida (Pires) Carvalho.

Jane earned a B.A. at Hood College and a Master’s from Brown University, where she was a teaching fellow. She earned a J.D. at Northeastern Law School. She was fluent in several languages and worked as a translator and cryptologist for the FBI, spent several years as an ESL educator and in 1983 passed the bar and became a prominent family law attorney. She began her career at the Law Office of Armand Fernandes, Jr. before opening a private practice in 1987 with offices in Boston, New Bedford and Martha’s Vineyard. She served on the Board of Directors for SMLAC and the Interchurch Council. She was a member of the Board of Bar Overseers Hearing Committee and a past President of the Massachusetts Bar Association Family Law Section Council. She was a frequent lecturer for MCLE, Northeastern University and UMass Law. She devoted her life to championing the underdog. Jane enjoyed hiking, biking, camping, being at the ocean and the outdoors in general. Most of all, she had a special place in her heart for animals, having rescued hundreds over the years. Jane was a longtime member of the Pentecostal Assembly in New Bedford and traveled to India for mission work. She was a devoted Christian and her faith comforted her through her illness. She was a one-of-a-kind woman, a trail blazer and an exceptionally hard worker. She will be deeply missed by her family and the friends, colleagues, children and clients whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her cousins, Paul, Deborah, Marsha and Tim Pires, her Aunt Rose Pires, and her friend, Donna Horrocks, who was her caregiver in her last years. She was “Auntie Jane” to Billy, Nicholas and Faith Horrocks and thought of Donna’s husband, Bill, as her brother. She had a hand in raising two fine human beings, Matthew Costa and Brittany Costa, who were her stepchildren.

Per Jane’s wishes, private funeral arrangements entrusted to Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, New Bedford.

Donations in Jane’s memory may be made to a “No Kill” animal shelter of your choice or simply practice a random act of kindness in Jane’s honor.

I went to Normandin and then to NBHS with Jane. She was special in so many ways. Smart, kind, gracious, friendly and unassuming. Reading her bio, I can see she accomplished great things...to no one’s surprise I suspect.  She led a life well lived and certainly was a credit to our alma mater and New Bedford writ large. May she Rest In Peace and be granted eternal salvation  Thank you Jane for being part of my junior and high school  life. You will not be forgotten

Oh such sad news.  I remember her well from jr and senior high.  Very smart and sweet girl. She was destined for the life she lived and it seems by the sound of it, she made the world a greater place.  God bless.

Good-bye, old friend. God Speed. We were friends since childhood and shared so much of our long paths in life over the years. When Jane decided to practice law full-time back in the Eighties she was a daily visitor to the Probate Court where she was early at the door, totally emerged in her cases for the day, crossing every T and and dotting every I. She was eager to learn her trade and the practice of Family Law to the best of her ability. We shared many discussions about our past days at Normandin and NBHS as well as the business of the day. Always a smile, a cheerful hello and greetings of the season. Jane was a special person. One of our most talented and genuine classmates. My heart is heavy. May God embrace her and hold her close for all Eternity. She was one of His Angels on Earth. God Bless her. I was very fortunate to have her in my life. RIP, my dear old friend.  ♥♥♥

Jane and I became friends at Normandin.  I remember her Mom picking us up after school in her very sporty Thunderbird - what a treat!  We occasionally visited her grandmother in Bristol, R.I. as I recall.  We shared the experience of being 'Jane' and 'only' children.  I thought about her just this past week when I drove by her childhood home set back on Acushnet Ave.  Highly intelligent, driven to do her best, her life story reflects those qualities.

A bright and shining light. I will always remember her smile, energy, great clothes, doting overprotective parents, the White Thunderbird waiting to take her home,  a friendly colleague and a romance the waves of which spanned a lifetime. LIght up heaven the Heavens Jane Carvahlo, you have done your part here on earth!

I always thought Jane had great style even before we knew what that meant.  I remember going to her house and having dinner with her family; her mother made the most wonderful Linzer tortes.  She was kind and generous and so sweet.  I've always been sorry we lost touch over these many years but I was heartened to know that she had such a fulfilling and admirable life.
