Reflections on August 16 and 17, 2013

Looking back at the Class of '65 summer get together events is so much fun. I am sharing my memories of Aug 16 and 17.

August 16, 2013 was a clear, beautiful and warm summer New Bedford night. we made our way to the Seaport Inn and already the festivities were in progress. For me, the evening was also a family event as my sisters, husband and brothers- in- law joined me in celebrating our class and classmates. We could hear the sound of music as we circled the parking lot. The tent by the marina was set up with the musicians and tables for the guests. I love to make the rounds and say hi to as many people as I can.

It had been agreed by several classmates at our 45th reunion that we'd hold informal yearly events each summer. So far we've been able to do so. Our class jammers put together a music program of our favorite songs from our high school days. We also had some guest artists do folk songs and Buffett tunes. Many of us got up and danced or sang along. Our jammers worked hard all year to prepare for this event and it was fun to sing along without worrying if you were out of tune, etc. I hope it continues.
The attendance the Marina was excellent with classmates coming from Florida, Rick D from Texas, Diane from New York and of course the loyal locals who didn't have conflicts in schedules. It's great to see the energy and the enthusiasm. I you wish to see some of the attendees, pictues have been posted on our galleries, but more are welcome. The sunset that night was glorious, so many shades of colors etched over the sky above the water, as I looked over John Lennon's Lucy in the sky with Diamonds came to mind.
The fun continued the next day with the canal cruise.

It was another glorious evening, clear sky and a gorgeous sunset. Many of the cruisers went to dinner together first. The views and scenery of the canal were breathtaking. The music this time was by the boat's entertainer but we weren't shy about dancing and singing along, drinks were available below deck. Many of our classmates were in attendance at both events. For a moment, it was like being back at a dance in high school except we could drink if we wanted to (legally, that is) We are fortunate to be able to enjoy these get togethers and parties, and again we thank those who made it possible. There are those who may say they don't "do" reunions, but at this point in our lives, it's not about heavy issues or self consciousness, but to celebrate our lives now and the major common ground we share, our beloved high school and growing up in the New Bedford area. What Nancy said in 2010 still holds true: reunions are not about hair lines, waist lines, credit lines (may I add political party lines) but lifelines.

On another personal note: Nancy was very generous presenting me with a bottle of wine, a New Bedford pin necklace, a New Bedford trivet and a card. I'm very grateful.

To all those who made it possible, thank you, one more time and stay well, keep singing and dreaming and smiling and don't miss sunsets.
