We have a lot of history to be proud of from New Bedford, here is an example.  One of my co-workers was puzzled because her child had to do a story about a famous person of Africian-American decent for Black History Month.  Now, she knew of many notable black people but those were the ones that were always chosen to be written about year after year, and she wanted her child to do someone who was not usually written about.  I sugested that she look up Sgt. William Carney from New Bedford who was the first Africian-American Medal of Honor winner.  I went on to tell her how he served in the Massachusetts 54th Infantry during the Civil War which was an all black battalion and fought at the battle of Fort Wagner.  It later became the movie "Glory".

I also told her that in New Bedford we had Carney Academy, Carney St. and a monument with a plaque in his honor, which I thought was around the Kempton St area.  When we were done talking about New Bedford, Sgt Carney, the Whaling Museum and other historical things, she siad that if it was not so far away it sounded like a great place to visit.

Congratulations, Irene Friado Uejio on publication of your short story.  I loved it.  Thanks, Dave Medeiros for copying and pasting it on our Various Topics, Messages from Classmates page.  Irene, your story brought back so many fond memories of my mother sewing.  I loved the warm tone of your story.  Thank you.

Dorothy (Castaldo) Laflamme our former teacher, advisor and friend had been beset by several medical problems this past year. The most recent of which is a broken arm which had to be surgically repaired with metal plates and screws. Her family has reached out to us, her other family, saying that it would be deeply appreciated, if we could send her a card or small note to help keep up her spirits while she is in the hospital and rehab. (She will be at the address below until Monday and then she will be sent to rehab and her family will supply a new address) Dorothy Laflamme (Attn: Ellison 12 - Room 10) c/o Mass General Hospital 55 Fruit Street Boston, MA 02114

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. My son and daughter and their families rented a house for a week in a beautiful area in Traverse City, Mi. The sons brought all their toys, pontoon boat, kayak, and canoe. Then they surprised me with a Tall Ship excursion around the bay on Lake Michigan. Great times, especially with families.

With the passing of Harvey and the current movement of Irma toward our Florida classmates ... do you remember any particular hurricanes from your lifetime that  affected you personally?

We were in Miami during and after Andrew. We lived in a trailer for 10 months while we rebuilt. We know what you are going through.

Now we are in Oregon surrounded by smoke from wildfires. I'd rather be where we are.

Prayers for all in harm's way.

Good Morning:

Feeling very grateful and humbled by the number of classmates who have sent me messages of good wishes as Hurricane Irma approached us.  We were originally predicted to suffer a direct hit.  We are as well prepared as can be, well stocked and hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.  We have been in Florida since 1968 and have experienced many hurricanes.  Of course Andrew is the one we measure all the others by.

As I type, the house is quiet, my son, husband, brother and sister in law are still sleeping.  I've been up for hours and listening to the sounds of wind and rain, admiring the photos on the wall and memorabilia.  In the end, safety of loved ones are the most precious.  I did place my wedding album, some photos and precious items in the innermost bathroom in the house. We keeping getting tornado updates.  But, as Jimmy Buffett said, "if you couldn't laugh, we'd all go insane."  Enjoy the little poem below that a dear friend sent me.

Love to all and thank you for your good wishes

*******

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE IRMA:

Twas the night before Irma and all through the house
Everyone was nervous, except for my spouse.
The shutters were hung ‘round the house all with care,
In hopes in the morning it still would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of spaghetti models danced in their heads.
And me in my night gown, and hubs in his cap,
Had just had some shots and a keg we did tap.
When outside the house there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from our chairs to see what was the matter.
Away to the window jumping over our clutter,
but we couldn’t see shit because of the shutters
With snacks in hand, and a go-bag all ready.
We retired to our room, hoping our roof did stay steady.
With a silent prayer said for all the residents of our state.
We will hunker down no choice now but to wait.

STAY SAFE!!!!

"To everything there is a season, a time for planting and a time for gathering.... " Ecclesiastes.    God gathered my husband to his choir in heaven.  I was lucky to have shared 49 1/2 years with him.  To my classmates who posted compassionate and warm messages on Facebook or contacted me personally, thank you!  Your kindness is appreciated.  Enjoy your time!
